“Your Goals Are The Road Maps That Guide You And Show You What Is Possible For Your Life.” – Les Brown
It's More Than A Job...It's A Calling
I came to financial planning after spending several years in the U.S. Peace Corps. I served in Santiago, Dominican Republic as a Small Enterprise Development volunteer then spent several more years as a Volunteer Recruiter for the organization. I lived and experienced a life unimaginable to most Americans. Homes with dirt floors and no electricity … the lack of education or economic opportunities … limited medical services and security nets. But I also witnessed undeniable determination, hope and pure joy for life. My fellow volunteers and I didn’t deliver a handout. Working side by side with individuals and families, we offered the tools and guidance that empowered them to set and achieve goals. My approach to financial planning is much the same.
A career in financial planning, following the Peace Corps, came naturally to me. Making a difference in the lives of people is a calling which I take seriously. I want to make a life-long impact in the live's of my clients by helping them take control of their finances and to educate in a way that they feel confident in their financial decisions. I am a Fiduciary because I strongly believe in the oath I take to put my clients’ interests first. Choosing Fee-Only compensation, I also provide services on an hourly as-needed basis because I think everyone, from all walks of life, deserves objective advice when seeking professional help.
Education And Background
I graduated from Mankato State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business and received a Master’s degree from Michigan State University. I am a CERTIFIEDFINANCIALPLANNER™ practitioner holding Series 7, 63, and 66 NASD investment licenses. Valuing the importance of life-long learning, I continue participating in multiple professional study programs and advanced courses to keep current in the financial advisory field. I also teach several classes through Community Ed on topics such as social security, cybersecurity, IRA planning and more. Following several years in the Peace Corps, I began my financial planning career at Fure Financial Corporation before striking out on my own. I established Financial Compass in 2005 to provide honest, independent advice that always serves the best interests of my clients who come from all walks of life.
On The Personal Side
In spite of a busy professional life, I always find time for my family, contributing to the community and enjoying the outdoors. I have been married to my lovely wife Gigi, since 1990 and together we have two children, Bryant and Angie. Coaching soccer, chaperoning field trips, serving as Cub Master, participating in mission trips and hiking Machu Picchu are just some of the highlights I’ve experienced while raising kind and generous young adults. A longtime member of the Masonic Family, I currently serve as the Public Relations Committee Chairman for the Grand Lodge of Minnesota, dedicated to informing communities about the great fraternity and the good works of Freemasonry. An Eagle Scout myself, I remain involved with the Boy Scouts of America as an Adult Cub Master. I truly enjoy running, hiking and leading an active lifestyle. Each new trail I encounter is a journey with twists and turns, obstacles and splendid possibilities…much like a financial journey.
